What to Do if You Have Been in an Auto Accident

What to Do if You Have an Auto Accident

Traffic accidents are jarring, and it can be very difficult to keep your wits about you after you’ve been in one. But your actions following a collision are important; choose poorly, and you could endanger yourself and others.

At Progressive Integrated Health Care, we want every driver to know what to do in the event of an auto accident, including seeking post-accident chiropractic care. That’s why we’ve created this quick guide for drivers in Dallas and other busy metro areas. Memorize these tips so that you’ll be prepared when the worst happens.

Tip 1. Move to Safety

If you’ve been in an accident, first assess your physical condition. If you’re not seriously hurt and you can move your limbs, try to pull your vehicle safely to the shoulder of the road, away from traffic. If you cannot move your vehicle without endangering yourself or others, turn on your hazard lights to make your car more visible to other drivers to prevent further collisions.

Tip 2. Get Out of Your Car

After making sure your car has come to a complete stop, put it in park and turn off the engine. If your vehicle has a manual transmission, turn on the hand brake. When it’s safe to do so, open your door and get out of the vehicle. If you can’t safely exit through the driver door, consider crawling out through the passenger side if there’s no broken glass or other hazards preventing you from doing so. Once you’re out, consider using flares to warn other drivers away from the crash.

Tip 3. Check on Other Parties

Look for anyone else who was involved in the accident, such as other drivers or pedestrians. If anyone is injured, even slightly, call 911 to get them checked out by a medical professional. Some symptoms seem mild at first but worsen over time, like dizziness, blurred vision, or headaches. It’s best to have everyone checked out by a health care professional at the scene before parting ways.

Tip 4. Call the Police

Police reports are important for documenting the scene and events that occurred before, during, and after the accident. They’re also vital for insurance claims. When the police arrive, give your statement using only the facts as you know them. Don’t admit fault or make accusations against other parties. The police will sort things out in their report.

Tip 5. Find an Experienced Chiropractor

Auto accidents are a common cause of back and neck pain. If you think you might have suffered whiplash or another injury from the impact, contact Dr. Adams right away! Your insurance company might not pay out the full amount you’re entitled to if you use a traditional chiropractor. Because Dr. Adams is also a licensed nurse practitioner, insurance companies deem him a medical professional and will pay more when you use his services. He is also thoroughly experienced with auto collision injuries and post-accident care.

Dr. Adams and the team at Progressive Integrated Healthcare of Dallas have worked with many Dallas-area law firms and their letter of protection documents. We understand the pain you’re experiencing and believe you should not be burdened further with mounting medical debt from us. Our seasoned Dallas team works with attorneys and respects their letters of protection, removing any payment expectations at the time of your treatment.

Remember: Some injuries have delayed presentation. You might not realize the extent of your injuries until hours or even days following the accident. Never accept a settlement until you’ve been thoroughly examined by a medical professional; the original offer might not cover the treatment you require.
